Educational estimate only, based on the base single rate and income test. Apply through Services Australia (Centrelink) for your real entitlement — assets test and relationship status also affect the outcome.

Means-Tested, Not Insurance-Based

Australia has no employer-funded unemployment insurance scheme — JobSeeker Payment is a welfare payment funded from general taxation, tested against your income and assets rather than your work history or reason for job loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is JobSeeker Payment based on why I lost my job?
No — unlike contribution-based unemployment insurance in some countries, JobSeeker Payment is means-tested against your income and assets, regardless of how you became unemployed. It does come with mutual obligation requirements, like actively looking for work, once approved.
How does the income test reduce JobSeeker Payment?
You can earn up to $150 a fortnight before your payment starts reducing. Above that, it reduces by 50 cents for every dollar earned up to $256, then 60 cents for every dollar above that, until it cuts off completely.
