Does Belize have deposit insurance?

Unlike Jamaica, Barbados or Trinidad and Tobago, Belize does not have a deposit insurance corporation or a guarantee fund. If a bank fails, there is no scheme that automatically pays your balance back up to a set limit. What protects depositors instead is the supervision of the Central Bank of Belize and the legal priority that depositors have over other creditors when a bank is wound up. This article explains what that means in practice and how to manage the risk yourself.

What actually protects your deposit

Domestic banks and licensed financial institutions are supervised by the Central Bank of Belize under the Domestic Banks and Financial Institutions Act. The Central Bank sets capital, liquidity and reporting requirements, inspects the banks, and can intervene in one that is in trouble — the first line of defence is stopping a failure from happening.

If a bank is placed into liquidation, depositors rank ahead of ordinary unsecured creditors in the queue for whatever the bank's assets realise. That is a legal priority, not a guarantee: how much you get back, and how quickly, depends on the state of the failed bank.

Credit unions are separate

Credit unions in Belize are regulated by the Central Bank as well but under their own framework, and the credit union movement has its own stabilisation and reserve arrangements. As with the banks, there is no external fund that guarantees a member's shares or deposits to a fixed amount.

Whether you use a bank or a credit union, treat institutional strength — how long it has operated, its size, its reputation — as part of the decision, because there is no scheme standing behind it.

How to manage the risk

Spreading larger balances across more than one well-established institution reduces how much is exposed to any single failure. Keep only what you need for spending and your emergency fund in cash deposits; money you will not touch for years can go into diversified investments, which carry market risk but are not tied to one bank's solvency.

Be especially wary of an institution — or an unlicensed 'investment club' — offering interest well above the market. A higher rate with no scheme behind it is more risk, not a better deal. Check that any deposit-taker is licensed by the Central Bank of Belize.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my money in a Belize bank guaranteed?
No. Belize has no deposit insurance scheme. Your deposit is protected by Central Bank of Belize supervision and by the legal priority depositors have over other creditors if a bank is wound up — but there is no fund that automatically repays your balance up to a limit.
What happens to my deposit if a Belize bank fails?
The Central Bank would step in, and in a liquidation depositors are paid ahead of ordinary unsecured creditors from the bank's assets. How much you recover, and when, depends on the failed bank's financial state — it is not a fixed guaranteed amount.
Are credit union savings safer?
Credit unions are supervised by the Central Bank and have their own stabilisation arrangements, but like the banks they have no external guarantee fund. Judge each institution on its strength, and spread large balances across more than one.
