How the Social Security Pension Works

👋 Simple Explanation

Social Security in Belize is the contributory scheme run by the Social Security Board (SSB). While you work, a contribution based on your weekly insurable earnings goes to the SSB, with your employer paying the larger share, up to the ceiling of $520 a week. From age 60 (if retired) or 65 that record becomes a weekly contributory pension (with 500+ contributions) or a one-off Retirement Grant.

Separately, the Non-Contributory Pension is a small means-tested monthly payment from age 65 for Belizeans who do not qualify for a contributory pension. Belize has no unemployment benefit in the scheme.

Why You Need Savings on Top

Because the insurable ceiling is low, the Social Security pension replaces only part of a working income. The layers on top are a registered pension plan through your employer or an individual plan, savings with a credit union, fixed deposits, and property. Use our retirement calculator to project how a monthly contribution grows by age 60, and check your SSB record early so you can fill any gap in contributions before you retire.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Social Security pension age in Belize?
60 if you have retired from insurable employment, or 65 whether or not you are still working. There is no reduced early pension before 60. A separate means-tested Non-Contributory Pension is paid from age 65 to people without a contributory pension.
How many contributions do I need for a Social Security pension?
At least 500 paid or credited contributions for the weekly contributory pension. With fewer than 500 you receive a one-off Retirement Grant instead. People aged 65+ with no contributory pension may qualify for the means-tested Non-Contributory Pension.
How much is the Belize Social Security pension?
It is a percentage of your average insurable earnings — starting near 30% for the minimum 500 contributions and rising toward a cap of about 60% with more contributions — subject to a minimum weekly pension set by the SSB. Insurable earnings are capped at BZD $520 a week, so the pension replaces only part of a working income.
