ποΈ Financial PlanningThe Social Security pension: age, contributions and how much you get
Social Security in Belize is the contributory social security scheme run by the Social Security Board (SSB). While you work, a contribution based on your insurable earnings goes to the SSB, with your employer paying the larger share. From age 60 (if you have stopped working) or age 65 regardless, that record turns into a retirement benefit: a weekly contributory pension, or a one-off grant if you have too few contributions. There is also a separate, means-tested Non-Contributory Pension for older people with little or no contribution record. This guide covers the rules, the rates, and how Social Security fits with your own saving.
Age and contributions
You can claim the contributory retirement pension from age 60 if you have retired from insurable employment, or from age 65 whether or not you are still working. There is no reduced early pension before 60.
To qualify for the weekly pension you need at least 500 paid or credited contributions. With fewer than 500 (but at least the minimum the SSB sets) you get a one-off Retirement Grant instead of a weekly pension. Separately, the Non-Contributory Pension is a small means-tested monthly payment for Belizeans aged 65 and over who do not qualify for a contributory pension.
How much the Social Security pension pays
The contributory pension is a percentage of your average insurable earnings over your best contribution years β starting at roughly 30% for the minimum 500 contributions and rising by about 2% for each extra 50 contributions, up to a cap of around 60%. There is a minimum weekly pension, set by the SSB and adjusted from time to time.
Contributions count only up to the insurable earnings ceiling, which is BZD $520 a week (about BZD $2,080 a month) and is raised periodically. The total contribution is around 8% of insurable earnings, split between employee and employer with the employer paying more; a self-employed person pays a combined rate. Because the ceiling is low, even a full career produces a pension that replaces only part of a working income.
Why you need savings on top
For most people the Social Security pension covers only part of what they need in retirement. The layers on top are a registered pension plan through your employer or an individual retirement plan β contributions may be deductible up to a cap β plus savings with a credit union, fixed deposits and, very commonly in Belize, property.
Check your Social Security contribution record well before you retire. If you have gaps β from time overseas, self-employment without contributing, or periods out of work β it is worth knowing where you stand against the 500-contribution line.
