NIS Pension Calculator
See when you can claim the NIS Old Age Pension in Guyana, whether your record meets the 750-contribution rule, and roughly how much the monthly pension would be.
Your Details
About one contribution per week or per month worked, depending on how you are paid. 750 is roughly 15 years. Check your record with a Contribution Statement from NIS.
Contributions are only counted up to the insurable earnings ceiling (about $280,000 a month), which NIS raises from time to time.

a one-off Old Age Grant, not a monthly pension
💬 In Plain Words
At 45 you are 15 years from the NIS pension age of 60. With 600 contributions you are short of the 750 needed for a monthly pension, but you have more than 50, so you would get a one-off Old Age Grant at 60. You need 150 more contributions for the pension. The universal Old Age Pension at 65 is not affected.
The Rules
Estimate for educational purposes, not an official assessment from the National Insurance Scheme. The percentage used here is a rough illustration — the official calculation depends on your full contribution record and the rates in force. The minimum pension, the insurable ceiling and the universal Old Age Pension amount are adjusted from time to time. Get a Contribution Statement and apply through NIS.
How the NIS Pension Works
👋 Simple Explanation
The National Insurance Scheme is Guyana's contributory social security system. While you work, 5.6% of your insurable pay goes to NIS and your employer adds 8.4% (self-employed people pay 12.5%), up to the insurable earnings ceiling. At 60 that record turns into either a monthly Old Age Pension (if you have 750+ contributions) or a one-off Old Age Grant (50–749 contributions).
Separately, the government pays a non-contributory universal Old Age Pension — $41,255 a month in 2025 — to every citizen from age 65, regardless of work history. If you qualify for both, you receive both.
Why You Need Savings on Top
For most people the two state pensions together replace only part of a working income. The layers on top are an approved pension or superannuation scheme (contributions are tax-deductible up to a limit), unit trusts, the Guyana Stock Exchange, and property. Use our retirement calculator to project how a monthly contribution grows by age 60, and check your NIS record early so you can fill any gap in contributions before you retire.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the NIS pension age in Guyana?
- 60 for the contributory NIS Old Age Pension, if you have at least 750 contributions. NIS is not means-tested, so you can keep working and still receive it. The separate non-contributory universal Old Age Pension is paid from age 65 to every citizen regardless of contributions.
- How many contributions do I need for an NIS pension?
- At least 750 for a monthly NIS Old Age Pension. With between 50 and 749 contributions you receive a one-off Old Age Grant instead. Below 50 there is no old-age benefit from NIS — though you would still get the universal Old Age Pension at 65.
- How much is the NIS pension in Guyana?
- It is worked out as a percentage of your average insurable earnings — roughly 40% for the first 750 contributions, rising by about 1% for each extra 50, up to a cap, with a minimum pension floor. Because the insurable ceiling is modest, the pension replaces only part of a working income.
