💬 In Plain Words

At 45 you are 15 years from the earliest NIS retirement age of 60 (if you have retired), and 20 from 65. With 900 contributions you meet the 750-contribution rule, so you qualify for a monthly pension: about $3,000 a month (lifted to the TT$3,000 minimum).

How the NIS Pension Works

👋 Simple Explanation

The National Insurance System, run by the National Insurance Board (NIBTT), is Trinidad and Tobago's contributory social security system. While you work, a total of 13.2% of your insurable earnings goes to NIS — roughly one-third from you and two-thirds from your employer — up to the top earnings class. At retirement that record turns into either a monthly retirement pension (with 750+ contributions) or a one-off Retirement Grant (50–749 contributions).

The monthly pension is a percentage of your average weekly insurable earnings — around 30% at 750 contributions, rising with extra contributions to about 48% — with a minimum of TT$3,000 a month. It is deliberately modest: a floor to build on, not a full income.

Why You Need Savings on Top

For most people the NIS pension replaces only part of their working income. The layers on top are an approved pension plan through your employer or an approved deferred annuity you set up yourself (contributions are tax-deductible, with NIS, up to TT$60,000 a year), plus unit trusts, the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange and property. Use our retirement calculator to project how a monthly contribution grows by retirement age, and check your NIS record early so you know where you stand against the 750-contribution line.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NIS retirement pension age in Trinidad and Tobago?
Age 60 if you have retired from work, or age 65 whether you are working or not. The NIS retirement pension is not means-tested. The separate Senior Citizens' Pension, for people 65 and over on a low income, is means-tested.
How many contributions do I need for an NIS pension?
At least 750 weekly contributions for the monthly retirement pension. With between 50 and 749 contributions you get a one-off Retirement Grant — a lump sum of three times the total contributions paid by and for you — instead. Below 50 contributions there is no retirement benefit.
How much is the NIS pension?
It is a percentage of your average weekly insurable earnings — roughly 30% at 750 contributions, rising with extra contributions to about 48% — subject to a minimum of TT$3,000 a month. The NIS pension is a floor, not a full retirement income.
