UIF Benefit Calculator
Estimate how much the UIF would pay you if you were retrenched, and how many months the benefit would last based on your work history.
Your Details
UIF only counts salary up to the ceiling of R 17 712 a month. Earnings above that are not covered.
You earn 1 day of benefit for every 4 days worked, up to 365 days in a rolling 4-year cycle.
Your Estimate
Estimated UIF Benefit
R 6 205/mo
for about 6.0 months · R 37 101 total · ≈ 41% of your salary
💬 In Plain Words
On a salary of R 15 000, UIF counts R 15 000 (the rest is above the ceiling and not covered). At an income replacement rate of about 41% that is roughly R 6 205 a month. With 24 months of contributions you have built 182 days of benefit — about 6.0 months' worth.
The Numbers
Rough estimate for educational purposes, not an official assessment from the UIF. The real income replacement rate uses a sliding formula (not the straight line used here), the earnings ceiling and rules are updated from time to time, and eligibility depends on why and when you left your job. Apply through uFiling or a Labour Centre within six months of your last working day.
How the UIF Benefit Works
👋 Simple Explanation
While you work, 1% of your pay goes to the Unemployment Insurance Fund and your employer adds another 1%, up to the earnings ceiling. If you lose your job through no fault of your own, you can claim a benefit worth 38%–60% of your capped salary — higher for lower earners — for as many days as you have built up, to a maximum of 365 days in a four-year cycle.
UIF also pays illness, maternity, adoption and dependants' benefits. It does not cover the self-employed (though voluntary cover is being introduced), and it does not pay if you resigned or were dismissed for misconduct.
Why UIF Is Not Enough on Its Own
UIF replaces well under half of a middle income, is capped, and runs out. A retrenchment also usually brings severance pay of at least one week per year of service — a one-off, taxed on a separate table. Between them they buy time, not security. A personal emergency fund of 3–6 months of expenses is the real backbone. Use our emergency fund calculator to size yours.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How much does UIF pay if you lose your job?
- A percentage of your previous salary — the income replacement rate slides from around 60% for low earners to about 38% at the UIF earnings ceiling (R17,712 a month in 2024). Anything you earned above the ceiling is not covered.
- How long does the UIF benefit last?
- You build one day of benefit for every four days worked as a contributor, up to a maximum of 365 days (about 12 months) in a rolling four-year cycle. A short work history means fewer days.
- Who can claim the UIF unemployment benefit?
- Contributors who lose their job through no fault of their own — retrenchment, a contract ending, or the employer's insolvency. You must claim within six months of your last day and register as a work-seeker. Resigning or being dismissed for misconduct generally disqualifies you.
