🏦 BanksWhat is a credit report and the CIB in Bangladesh?
When you apply for a bank loan, a credit card, a lease or a large trade credit in Bangladesh, the lender is required to pull a report from the Credit Information Bureau (CIB), run by Bangladesh Bank since 1992 (online since 2011). Every bank and finance company reports every borrower to the CIB each month. There is no consumer credit score as such — what matters is the classification of your existing loans and whether you appear as a defaulter. Understanding this helps you keep access to credit.
What the CIB records and the loan classifications
Your CIB report lists every loan, credit card, lease and overdraft in your name (and where you are a guarantor), with the sanctioned amount, the outstanding balance, the security, and the classification status reported by the lender. Each facility is classified as Standard, SMA (special mention account — slightly overdue), Substandard, Doubtful or Bad/Loss. Anything below Standard makes a new loan very hard, and a Bad/Loss classification marks you as a defaulter.
Lenders combine the CIB report with your income and existing EMIs. Being listed as a loan defaulter anywhere in the banking system blocks new credit until it is cleared and the lender updates the CIB.
Defaults and clearing your record
Missing instalments moves a facility from Standard to SMA and then, after longer arrears, to Substandard and worse. A downgraded status stays on the CIB history after you regularise the loan, but the current status is what matters most to a new lender.
If you are struggling, ask the lender about rescheduling before the loan is classified. Once you have cleared a bad loan, get a clearance certificate from the lender and make sure they submit the update to the CIB — then check your report again a month later to confirm the status changed.
Seeing your own CIB report
Individuals can apply for their own CIB report. In practice this is done through a bank you deal with, or directly to Bangladesh Bank's Credit Information Bureau with your national ID and a prescribed form and fee. Bangladesh Bank has been opening up self-inquiry and a separate private credit-bureau system is being built to make this easier.
If a facility on your report is wrong — a loan you never took, or one you have fully repaid still showing as outstanding — take it up with the reporting lender in writing, and escalate to Bangladesh Bank if they do not correct it. Keep every repayment receipt and clearance letter.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is there a credit score in Bangladesh?
- Not a consumer score like a FICO number. Lenders rely on the CIB report from Bangladesh Bank, which shows your loans and their classification (Standard, SMA, Substandard, Doubtful, Bad/Loss) and whether you are listed as a defaulter. A separate private credit-bureau system is under development.
- How do I get my CIB report in Bangladesh?
- Apply through a bank you deal with, or directly to Bangladesh Bank's Credit Information Bureau with your national ID, the prescribed form and a small fee. Do this before a big loan application so you can fix any errors first.
- How long does a bad loan stay on the CIB?
- The historical status stays on the record after you clear the loan, but the current classification is what a new lender weighs most. Clearing the debt, getting a clearance certificate, and confirming the lender updated the CIB is what restores your access to credit.
