💬 In Plain Words
Saving $25,000 a month, you reach your goal of $1,000,000 in 2 years and 5 months. By then you have put in $975,000 from your own pocket, and the rest — $25,000 — is return the money generated on its own.
Monthly Saving Needed for $1,000,000
Projections assume a constant return, which varies by instrument. This is not financial advice.
How the Calculator Works
👋 Simple Explanation
This calculator answers a simple question: if you save the same amount every month, when exactly do you reach your goal? Want to get there faster? There are only two levers: save more per month, or choose an instrument with a better return (and more risk).
The calculator simulates month by month, applies your annual return (divided by 12) to the growing balance, and adds your monthly saving each period, until the balance reaches the goal.
To work out the monthly saving needed to reach the goal within a set time, it uses the future value formula, backwards:
PMT = (Goal − P × (1+r)ⁿ) × r / [(1+r)ⁿ − 1]
Where P = current savings, r = monthly return (annual ÷ 12), n = months to the goal, and PMT = the monthly saving needed.
How to Reach the Goal Faster
Automate the saving. Set up a standing order for the same day your salary lands, before you get a chance to spend it. "Pay yourself first" is the most effective habit for reaching savings goals.
Check where you keep the money in the meantime. Leaving it to earn nothing is missing the chance to see it grow on its own. A savings account covered by the Jamaica Deposit Insurance Corporation, or a fixed deposit for money you can lock away, are common options for short- and medium-term goals.
Direct one-off amounts straight at the goal. A bonus, a tax refund or a windfall can cut the time significantly if you send it straight to the saving rather than spending it.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How long does it take to save J$1,000,000?
- It depends on how much you save each month and on the return where you keep the money. Use the calculator above with your own figures — the monthly amount and the rate change the result a lot. In Jamaica, remember the bank deducts 25% withholding tax from interest at source.
- What return should I use in the calculator?
- It depends on the instrument. A savings account covered by the Jamaica Deposit Insurance Corporation pays a variable rate that moves with the Bank of Jamaica policy rate and with each bank's terms — check the current rate after the 25% withholding tax the bank deducts at source before you plan with a realistic figure. A fixed deposit usually pays a higher, fixed rate but locks the money away.
- Is it better to save more per month or seek a higher return?
- Increasing your monthly amount has a more predictable effect on the time to the goal. Seeking a higher return can speed things up but usually means taking more risk. Combining both is usually the most balanced approach.
