State Pension Age and Contributions: Two Separate Things
👋 Simple Explanation
When you can get the State Pension and how much you get are two different questions. The State Pension age is 66, with the option to defer to 70 for a higher rate. The amount depends on your PRSI record over your working life, plus credited contributions and HomeCaring Periods.
The full rate is worked out under the Total Contributions Approach: your paid PRSI contributions, plus up to 520 credited contributions and up to 1,040 HomeCaring Periods, are divided by 2,080 (40 years). Reach 2,080 or more and you get the full rate of €299.30 a week; fewer contributions give a proportionately lower rate.
You need at least 520 paid contributions (10 years) to qualify for any contributory pension. If you have gaps you may be able to make voluntary contributions, and time working in another EU country can count under the EU coordination rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the State Pension age in Ireland?
- 66. Earlier plans to raise it were dropped; instead you can now choose to defer claiming up to age 70 in return for a higher weekly rate. There is no reduced early State Pension before 66.
- How many PRSI contributions do I need for the full State Pension?
- Under the Total Contributions Approach, 2,080 (40 years) of paid plus credited contributions and HomeCaring Periods give the full rate — €299.30 a week from January 2026. You need at least 520 paid contributions (10 years) to qualify for any contributory pension.
- Do years spent caring count?
- Yes. HomeCaring Periods for full-time care of a child under 12 or a person with a disability count towards the Total Contributions Approach, up to a maximum of 20 years (1,040 contributions). This matters for anyone who took time out of paid work to care.
